Eight years ago, my husband and I started Serenity Kids to make children healthier by offering nutrient-dense foods that taste great to kids and are convenient for parents. Creating better food options for parents – with high quality and natural ingredients – is why we exist. That’s why it’s so important for us to address a recent article from Consumer Reports regarding our Puffs, to make sure parents have the facts about heavy metals and our products.
Heavy metals are prevalent in the food system – in fact, most produce can be found to contain heavy metals. In line with our commitment to use natural and nutrient-dense ingredients in our products, our puffs are seasoned with dried organic vegetable blends for added nutritional value rather than artificial flavorings. Because of that, we go above and beyond (and always have) to test for heavy metals in our entire product collection.
We have a state-of-the-art quality program and testing protocols, which includes testing all of our products as well as getting them independently tested by the Clean Label Project. We have suppliers who use soil remediation methods to find foods with the lowest achievable levels of contaminants and prioritize them for babies. We also carefully vet all of our suppliers to ensure we are using the cleanest possible ingredients so that we can feel good about the safety of our foods.
Our puffs are and have always been safe for consumption. In the absence of FDA standards and benchmarks to regulate heavy metals across all baby food segments, we've created our own program using benchmarks set by California's Prop 65 law and the European Union, which is among the strictest food safety and quality programs for babies worldwide. Our Puffs, and all of our products, are well below the Maximum Allowable Dose Levels (MADLs) for heavy metals set by Prop 65. The FDA has been working through its Closer to Zero action plan to assess the presence of lead and other heavy metals in foods intended for babies and young children and is working to set achievable action levels – which we are supportive of. We will persistently advocate for baby food regulations and standards and continually ensure Serenity Kids products meet your high standards—and ours.
Transparency is really important to us, and we have always addressed heavy metals head on because we are confident in the safety of our products and ingredients.
